Hôtel de Ville de Brienne-le-Château

Présentation

Napoleon I drafted his will in April 1821 and bequeathed 1,200,000 gold francs to the town of Brienne. Under Napoleon III, in 1856, his testamentary dispositions were executed. Finally, it will be used to rebuild the city destroyed after the fighting of 1814, notably the church and to build the Town Hall and the statue representing Bonaparte, ‘City Hall. The pediment of the edifice, bearing the French republican motto, depicts the portrait of Napoleon I, depicted in the manner of the Roman emperors whom he admired so much, wearing a crown of laurels surrounded by two Victories and Surmounted by the imperial eagle.
