Présentation
The Forest of Orient, at the heart of the regional nature park of the same name, is steeped in the mythology that has grown up
around the Order of the Temple. It covers an area of 1,200 hectares purchased by the Templars in 1255:
the largest forest estate the Templars ever owned in the West.
In creating this new discovery trail, the Department sought to capitalise on the success of the
Templars 2012 year and to supplement the information panels already in place at the Templar sites in the Aube:
Avalleur, Clairvaux, Fresnoy, Payns, Maison du Parc, Mesnil-Saint-Loup.
A project made possible thanks to the research work of two Templar specialists: Valérie Alanièce and François Gilet, authors of all the information panels.
The proposed signage is designed to indicate to walkers where the ancient historical boundaries of the Templars’ forest estate lie. Eleven illustrated and explanatory display panels, available in French and English, mark a 5 km route through the heart of this forest. The trail is accessible to all, on foot or by mountain bike. The panels help visitors understand why and how the Templars organised themselves to manage this forest.
