The church, under the name of St-Pierre and St-Paul, evolved according to its time. It bears the traces of the construction of the 12th century, a third of the building is from the 14th century, then it is enlarged in the 15th century with a spacious choir and the rest of the building is from the 16th century. The style is predominantly Gothic. Surmounted by an elevated tower in place of a bell tower, this tower, about 33 meters high, dates from 1790. Napoleon probably made his first communion in the church of Brienne. Before 1914, the chevet was surrounded by the cemetery. In 1940, the church was partially destroyed. It has remarkable stained glass windows, in particular the martyr of Sainte-Agathe and Noah’s ark, made in Troyenne grisaille. Free visit every day. It is possible to visit it with a guide during guided tours of Brienne-le-Château by the Tourist Office.

The statue of Louis Rochet represents Bonaparte at 15 years old, leaving the military school. Standing, he holds in his right hand his favorite book, “The Lives of the Illustrious Men” by Plutarch. His left hand is slipped into the notch of his schoolboy’s waistcoat. This attitude became characteristic of the Emperor’s representations. Behind him, the globe recalls the will to conquer the world. The base of the statue is placed on a richly decorated pedestal, enhanced by 4 eagles carved on each corner. Three of the sides of the base are decorated respectively by the Imperial Weapons, the Civil Code and the Libra. At the front of the statue, one face contains an inscription which testifies to the singular attachment of Napoleon I to the town of Brienne and pays homage to him: “For my thought Brienne is my homeland, this is what I have Felt the first impressions of Man. “

The town of Brienne possessed a feudal castle, mentioned as early as 951, whose manuscripts describe an enclosure with a keep that was destroyed numerous times. In 1640, the Luxembourg family sold the feudal castle to Henri Auguste de Loménie. A little later, Nicolas Louis de Loménie inherited the County of Brienne. Among his children, two distinguished themselves: Etienne Charles became Prime Minister under Louis XVI, and Louis Marie Athanase served as Minister and Secretary of State for War. It was the latter who, in 1757, inherited the old fortress of Brienne. As it had fallen into ruin, he decided to demolish it and build the current structure. The château was built according to the plans of the architect JL Fontaine, starting in 1770, and the pavilions between 1770 and 1772. The inauguration took place on August 25, 1778, the feast day of Saint Louis (Louis being both the name of the King of France and of the Count of Brienne (Louis-Marie-Arthanase)), but the artwork, paintings, and sculptures were not completed until 1782. All the landscaping work in the park was not finished until around 1789, on the eve of the French Revolution, during which Louis Marie Athanase perished on the scaffold. His widow died in 1812. The château is one of the most majestic in Champagne and, due to its refined style, has earned it the nickname “The Little Versailles of the Aube.” During the French Campaign of 1814, the château was completely ransacked. In 1852, the château belonged to… The château is linked to the Bauffremont family. Its last owner was Duke Théodore de Bauffremont. Following his financial collapse, the château was sold in October 1933 to a property dealer who dispersed the furniture, library, and works of art, leaving the château to fall into disrepair. Purchased in 1955 by the Aube General Council, it was converted into a psychotherapeutic center and inaugurated on May 24, 1959, thus ensuring its preservation. Visits to the exterior are now prohibited to the public for safety reasons. A few guided tours of the interior are offered by the Association for the Preservation of Briennois Heritage. For the 2026 season, four guided tours will take place between July and October. These will be enhanced with entertainment (concerts, lectures). He distinguished himself by his feats of arms, quickly climbed the military rungs and Napoleon made him Count of the Empire in 1814. He was subsequently charged with a vast plan for the improvement of artillery, and in particular revolutionized the cannon system. Following the capture of Constantine, he was appointed Governor of Algeria in 1837. A statue is erected to his glory and will be moved to Brienne in 1964, on the Place de la République. This statue of 3 meters high is the work of the sculptor Gustave Crauk. Maréchal Valée died in 1846 and was buried in the invalids. Its name is engraved under the triumphal arch.

The Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens church in Brienne-la-Vieille stands on a site already occupied in the Gallo-Roman period and has one of the oldest elevations in the department. Indeed, its nave, with its simple forms, has four small, slightly splayed windows open at the top of the walls, combining brick and stone in their construction, which may date from the 9th-10th centuries; the nave is of a beautiful volume for the period. Five wider and taller windows were opened in the 17th or 18th century. The nave is paneled in a hull. The exposed structural elements (tie beams and kingposts) show 16th-century layouts. The western portal, from the 12th century, comes from the Abbey of Basse-Fontaine, secularized in 1773. On a crossing of the transept that may also date from the 9th-10th centuries, a flamboyant style architecture and choir were rebuilt (around 1520). This new architecture was taken up again at the very beginning of the 17th century (consecration in 1615), a campaign during which the two transept arms were restored. The old stained glass windows were installed during two campaigns. The first are slightly later than the time of construction of the new apse, and date from the second quarter of the 16th century; the others are contemporary with the alterations of the choir and transept completed at the beginning of the 17th century. This ensemble is today incomplete and has suffered many losses and modifications over time. The oldest stained glass windows feature a Crucifixion and saints painted in colored glass, grisaille and silver yellow (Saint Remi full-length, Saint Claude and Saint Roch in roundels). The central bay, dated 1536, shows two praying donors, Jehan Huet and his wife Guyotte Verdin, presented by the Virgin of the Seven Sorrows and by Saint John the Baptist. The stained glass windows from the early 17th century, in grisaille and silver yellow, show figures of apostles and Christ of the Resurrection. The glass decoration was completed in the contemporary period, notably in the south arm of the transept where we see a stained glass window from 1876 dedicated to Saint John the Baptist by E. Virot, from Troyes, and a decorative window (borders) from 1968. The old stained glass windows were restored before the Second World War and then removed in 1939-1940. Some of them were restored again after re-installation in 1951-54 and around 1960 by J. Laurent then J.-J. Gruber. The building and stained glass windows were classified as historical monuments (as buildings) on July 30, 1907. The church is part of the Aube Stained Glass Route.
